Ladies of Restaurants brings greater diversity to Manchester


Diversity can be defined by two keywords: acceptance and respect. It is understanding that each individual is different and unique. Diversity is important in a workplace because it fosters mutual respect amongst employees.


A movement is set to launch in Manchester to encourage gender diversity in the hospitality sector. This movement is called Ladies of Restaurants (L.O.R) which supports and connects women in the hospitality sector through events and workshops.


What is L.O.R?


Known as Ladies of Restaurants, it was set up to support women within the hospitality industry. They operate in London & Manchester which are great locations for food and drink. The idea is to look at ways to help and support each other from assisting someone looking for a new job to just hanging out (and drink wine too).


The founder of L.O.R, Natalia Ribbe has worked within hospitality across the world for over 15 years and trained in both fine and casual dining. Her goal is to offer a platform to encourage discussion, empowerment and to celebrate L.O.R. There are regular events for meet and greet. This gives the opportunity for members to listen to experts who have been in the industry and discuss topics which affect women including:


  • Working as a mum
  • Feeling Guilty
  • Gender Pay Gap
  • Sexual Harassment
  • Gluten Options on menus

So the question is, why is this movement needed?


The hospitality sector faces complex set of problems when it comes to the representation of women. Only 26% of senior management in the industry are taken by women. It is rather difficult to commit to long hours or shifts when women reach a the stage to start a family. It is not easy to return back to work or demand flexibility. One of the key factors lies upon the lack of family-friendly policies in the hospitality industry.


This movement is all about overcoming the struggles women face in the hospitality sector. This can be a simple rant to fellow members and seeking advice. The L.O.R adopts a community to support women facing the same problems. The ‘connection’ is what makes it empowering.


With the success of over 1,000 members, L.O.R have long list of calendar events that is being brought up to the north. These events will hold networking and training programmes for women including discussions based on maternity leave.


Stay tuned for L.O.R plans to expand into Brighton. Bristol and Edinburgh in 2019!
